Eva Rubinstein

Eva Rubinstein was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, as her mother, Nela Młynarska, was accompanying her husband (the late Arthur Rubinstein) on a South American tour. When not traveling, the family lived mainly in Paris until the outbreak of World War II in 1939, and then immigrated to the United States. She became a U.S. citizen in 1946 and attended the Scripps College and the Theatre Department of the University of California, Los Angeles. Trained in ballet from the age of five in Paris, and later in New York and California, Eva danced and acted on and off Broadway and on a tour in Europe. She opened and played in the original New York company of “The Diary of Anne Frank” from 1955 to 1956.

“Based in New York, I was doing freelance work that included portraits, nudes, interiors, traveling, and teaching work-shops and seminars in the U.S. and abroad. Most of my photos relate to certain parts of my life, and I consider my work to some extent autobiographical. Some years ago I stepped away from photography (I am now nearly 91 years old.).”

Eva began photographing in 1967 with the help of Sean Kernan, and later studied briefly with Lisette Model, 1969, Ken Heyman, 1970, Jim Hughes, 1971, and Diane Arbus, 1971. Her work has appeared in many books, major magazines and photographic publications in the U.S., Europe, and South America. She exhibited in numerous one-person and group shows in U.S. and abroad.

Eva Rubinstein is an honorary member of the Polish-American Photographic Club and its enthusiastic supporter since its founding.
