Wiesław Zdaniewski

Born in Poland Wiesław A. Zdaniewski holds Ph.D. degree in inorganic chemistry from Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden. He learned the craft of photography in Poland after the World War Il from his father, both engineer and fine art photographer. It was however after he emigrated to Sweden in the seventies and subsequently to the USA, that he began treating the medium seriously.

As a post-doc at Pennsylvania State University, in 1975 he had the opportunity to visit NYC galleries and museums, and deepen his skills by studying the writings of Andreas Feininger, Ansel Adams, and the critical essays of Sadakhichi Hartmann. He then used the acquired knowledge of fundamentals of technique and the more elusive concepts of the art of composition for his own black & white photography

Working professionally both as a scientist and as a photographer, Zdaniewski also exhibited and taught the art of photography. His first one man show took place in 1976 at the Pennsylvania State University during his post-doctoral fellowship. This was followed by the major exhibition “Two Provinces USA-Sweden” shown in Stockholm, and then in Gothenburg Sweden, in Cracow Poland, at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg and in Austin TX. Subsequently he taught darkroom techniques at the International Center of Photography(1982) in New York, publishing simultaneously in science, in photography and in literary and sports magazines.

Presently his time is devoted exclusively to photography. He has in the works an extended project “Tho Silence of the Rocks” for book printing, a result of several years of trekking and mountain climbing in the Tatras in the south of Poland with a view camera over his shoulders.

“Patagonia” is a new exceptional portfolio of color negatives (the Tatras are in black & white, while the Andes are in color!) taken recently in Argentina and Chile with a 4×5 camera. The color negatives were drum scanned and presented as C- prints. A member of the Swedish Photographers Association, Wiesław was also President of the Polish American Photographic Club in New York in 2002-2005.
